Plastic Surgery
Department of Plastic Surgery at KMC is known for its all round efficiency and managed by a senior plastic surgeon of more than 25 years of experience coupled with a microvascular surgeon.
The department runs a free cleft lip and palate rehabilitation programme for the last two years. This programme helps to correct the cleft lip and palate in a comprehensive way. After surgery, all the patients are followed up regularly. Speech therapy and dental correction are also given whenever necessary. More than 200 patients were benefited by this project till now.
Rotary club of Tiruchirapalli metro appreciated the efforts taken by KMC in treating cleft lip and palate patients. Rotary club volunteered to treat 50 poor children affected by cleft lip and palate. The joint venture of KMC with Rotary Club was inaugurated by Honorouble Shri.A.Raja M.A.,B.L., then Minister of State for Health.
Role of plastic surgery in trauma cannot be over-emphasised here. More than 70% of the victims of injury need plastic surgery care. The department runs an efficient system to look after the trauma victims round the clock. All hand injuries, which are often an occupational hazard, are given top priority to save the "earning hand" of the poor.
More than 100 major burns patients have been treated by the plastic surgeons of KMC so far. The department has evolved methods by which the cost of these major plastic procedures is kept low and speedy treatment can be delivered to the victims.
Microsurgery is one of the special techniques in plastic surgery. Amputated hands and fingers are reimplanted with the help of microsurgery. "Free flaps" - the gold standard for covering major defects (to save injured limbs) are routinely performed by this department. We are proud to let the public know that this service is not available elsewhere in Tamilnadu except in Chennai and Coimbatore.
Number of facial injuries are treated every year by the plastic surgeons of KMC. Fractures involving facial bones are corrected using advanced techniques along with the help of our dental department.
The department works in tandem with all the other surgical specialities in the hour of need to treat the compound fractures, thoracic and vascular injuries, head injuries and other major injuries. |

A live workshop to demonstrate the latest advancement in the field of plastic surgery held at KMC is the highlight of the three-day annual conference of the Tamilnadu and Pondicherry Association of Plastic surgeons held from January 6 to 8, 2006. - The Chief Plastic Surgeon of KMC, Dr.T.Krishnamurthy was the president of the association that had organized the conference. |
