VISION CARE PROGRAMME :
In India 2 crore people are blind due to cataracts and nearly 3.5 crore people are becoming blind every year. The trust has been conducting regular free eye screening camps in order to reduce the preventable cause of blindness. The trust has conducted 100 free eye screening camps in Trichy and its neighbouring districts. Nearly 15000 patients have been screened for various eye ailments and around 1000 patients had undergone free IOL surgeries.
CLEFT LIP AND CLEFT PALATE CORRECTION & REHABILITATION PROGRAMME :
This defect is a common congenital problem. This defect produces facial disfigurement, speech difficulties, ear infections, dental mal alignment, poor learning abilities and psychosocial problems like inferiority complex. The treatment of the cleft lip and palate needs a teamwork involving paediatricians, dental surgeons, ENT Surgeons, anaesthesiologists, psychiatrists, speech therapists, social worker and the plastic surgeons as the team leader. The trust has been running a free cleft lip and palate rehabilitation programme for the last 18 months. Each surgery will cost around Rs.15,000/- We have operated nearly 100 children completely free of cost and planning to continue this as an ongoing programme.
CANCER CARE PROGRAMME :
The word 'cancer' sends chills down the spine and it is like announcing a death sentence to the concerned. Unfortunately, this is a common concept among the lay public. To our surprise, one third of all these cancers are preventable and another one third are detectable at a very early stage with screening procedures and amneble with effective treatment. Hence, first and foremost measure is to create awareness about the cancer to the people, to eliminate age old beliefs about it and to enunciate the importance of cancer treatment and follow up.
We have been doing regular free medical camps and cancer screening camps from January 2000. The poor and the needy who attended the camps motivated us to start the trust in December 2000. The incidence of cancer in our region and lack of awareness about this dreaded disease made us to plan a comprehensive cancer care programme. The trust decided in April 2002 to provide 50 beds exclusively for cancer patients in the hospital. |
